Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches with a commanding 9-0 home victory over Earlham College on Saturday from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
The Grizzlies stand 5-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play and are 5-1 for the fall season.
The team dropped only five games in singles action.
Junior Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the top of the singles lineup.
Senior Bethany Harris (Avon, Ind./Avon) lost only one game on the No. 2 singles court. Junior Emily Roberts (Franklin, Ind./Edinburgh) won in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores. Sophomore Kayla Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and senior Becky Bonomini (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Noble) did not drop a game at No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions respectively. Junior Chelsea Howell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin County) rounded out the singles winners on the No. 4 court.
In doubles, the Howell/Sanders tandem picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Emily Helvie (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) and Harris did not lose a game at the No. 2 doubles position. Freshmen Megan Battles (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) and Claire Hirsch (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) earned an 8-1 win on the No. 3 court in their collegiate debuts.
Franklin is back on the court on Wednesday, October 1 at 6 p.m. when it travels to Hanover College. The match features the two unbeaten league teams.
