Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis swept all six singles matches and improved to 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with an 8-1 home victory over Anderson University on Wednesday from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
The Grizzlies (2-1) held a 2-1 edge after doubles action. The No. 1 tandem of juniors Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) and Chelsea Howell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin County) gave the hosts the advantage with an 8-6 triumph.
Seniors Becky Bonomini (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) and Julie Bazan (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) earned an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Franklin did not drop a set. Sanders improved to 4-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the top of the singles lineup. She is the reigning HCAC Player of the Week.
Senior Bethany Harris (Avon, Ind./Avon) picked up a victory on the No. 2 court. Bonomini clinched the team victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. Howell dropped only four games in earning a singles victory on the No. 4 court. Sophomore Kayla Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 singles position. Junior Emily Roberts (Franklin, Ind./Edinburgh) recorded a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles.
Franklin returns to action when it travels to Manchester University on Saturday, September 20 at noon.
