New Albany, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis team picked up victories at No. 1 and 2 singles, but it was not enough in a 7-2 road loss at IU-Southeast on Sunday.
The Grizzlies stand 1-1 after defeating Transylvania University in the team's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday.
Junior Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) won a hard-fought three-set match on the No. 1 singles court. She won the opening set in a tiebreaker 7-3. IU-Southeast's Whitney Batlinger took the second set by a 7-3 score in a tiebreaker. Sanders rebounded to win a third-set tiebreaker 10-4. She stands 3-0 on the season in singles. Her record includes a victory over Trine University in a suspended team dual match.
Senior Bethany Harris (Avon, Ind./Avon) also improved to 3-0 on the season after a straight-set triumph at the No. 2 singles position. She won the opening set 7-3 in a tiebreaker before securing the victory with a 6-3 score in the second set.
Franklin returns to action on Wednesday, September 17 at 6 p.m. when it hosts Anderson University in league play from the Mickel-Hoover Tennis Complex.
