Offense Leads Softball to Sunday Wins

Fort Myers, Fla. - The Franklin College softball team scored 22 runs on Sunday to improve to 4-0 on the season at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Grizzlies defeated Alverno College (Wis.) 12-0 in five innings and Newbury College (Mass.) 10-5.

Three pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter in the opener, while the offense scored eight runs in its first two at-bats.

Freshman Jasmine Hanna (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie) tossed 2.1 innings before sophomore McKensie Vanosdol (Mt. Vernon, Ind./Jennings County) struck out four batters in 1.2 innings to earn the win. Freshman Bailey Lindamood (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) had two strikeouts in pitching the final inning in the no-hitter.

Offensively, freshman Savannah Blevins (Wilkinson, Ind./Eastern Hancock) drove in four runs, including a three-run home run in the second inning. Sophomore Katie Struewing (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the first game.

Franklin scored five runs in the first inning and added three more runs on the home run by Blevins in the second inning. The Grizzlies capped the scoring with four runs in the fifth inning.

In the second contest, Franklin answered Newbury's two runs in the first inning with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hanna put the Grizzlies ahead 4-2 with a two-run double. The lead grew to 6-2 in the fourth inning after a wild pitch allowed a run to score and a sacrifice fly from Vanosdol.

After Newbury (0-4) trimmed the deficit to 7-5 in the sixth inning, the Grizzlies responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Vanosdol tossed a complete game and struck out five batters in the victory. She has recorded victories in the first four games, including three wins in relief.

Streuwing added three hits and scored two runs. Hanna and Vanosdol each drove in two runs as part of the nine-hit attack.

Franklin is hitting .349 and is a perfect 8-of-8 in stolen base attempts through the first four games of the season.

The Grizzlies resume play in the Gene Cusic Classic on Monday, March 3 against Kenyon College (Ohio) at 9 a.m. and St. John Fisher (N.Y.) at 11 a.m.
