Hanover, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis team lost a hard-fought 5-4 road match at Hanover College on Wednesday evening. The Grizzlies suffered its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) loss.
Franklin (5-2, 5-1 HCAC) split the six singles matches, but was unable to overcome a 2-1 deficit following doubles. Juniors Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) and Chelsea Howell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin County) earned an 8-3 victory on the No. 1 court.
In singles, Sanders dropped only two games in picking up a victory at the No. 1 position. Howell was also victorious by 6-3, 6-4 scores on the No. 4 court. Sophomore Kayla Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) won a third-set tiebreaker 10-6 to round out the winners.
Franklin returns to action on Sunday, October 5 at noon when it travels to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. A win would clinch a first-round bye in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament from October 18-19.
