Women's Tennis Rallies Past Anderson 5-4

Anderson, Ind. - The Franklin College women's tennis team won on five of the six singles courts to rally past Anderson University 5-4 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Anderson.

The Grizzlies (4-3, 3-1 HCAC) had to rally from a 3-0 deficit after falling in the three doubles matches.

Franklin started the rally with straight-set victories by junior Bethany Harris (Avon, Ind./Avon) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles; sophomore Shawnee Bayes (Austin, Ind./Austin) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and freshman Kayla Walker (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.

Anderson earned a victory at No. 3 singles to regain a 4-3 advantage.

However, sophomore Melissa Sanders (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) pulled out a three-set match at the top of the singles lineup. Sanders won the opening set 7-5, but dropped the second set in a tiebreaker 7-2. She won the deciding third set by a 6-2 score.

With the match tied 4-4, sophomore Chelsea Howell (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin County) saved seven match points in earning a three-set triumph 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8) to clinch the road victory. Howell won a third-set tiebreaker 10-8 at No 4 singles.

Franklin returns to action on Sunday, September 29 at 1 p.m. when it travels to Manchester University.
