Aerial Attack Leads Football Past Manchester 48-7 in HCAC Opener

Franklin, Ind. - Franklin College senior quarterback Jonny West (Speedway, Ind./Speedway) completed 30-of-34 passes and threw four touchdowns to lead the No. 13-ranked Grizzlies to a 48-7 victory over Manchester University on Saturday at Faught Stadium. The game was the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) opener for both teams.

Franklin (1-2, 1-0) scored on five of its seven offensive possessions, including 20 points in the first quarter. The team's 27-game HCAC winning streak is tied for the fourth longest active conference winning streak in the country.

West, the HCAC leader for passing yards, found junior Jonny Hession (Speedway, Ind./Speedway) for a six-yard score to cap an eight play, 36-yard drive to open the contest. Freshman Kole Stogner (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) gave Franklin a 13-0 advantage with a three-yard rushing touchdown at the 8:36 mark of the first quarter.

West threw his second touchdown in the first quarter when he hooked up senior Kyle Linville (Speedway, Ind./Speedway) from 11 yards. The score gave the hosts a 20-0 lead.

Junior Zach Cole (Middletown, Ind./Shenandoah) caught a five-yard touchdown pass with 11:42 left in the first half. Hession hauled in his second reception for a score to give the Grizzlies a 34-0 lead with 9:47 left in the first half.

After Manchester (0-3, 0-1) scored on the opening drive of the second half, Franklin answered with an 11 play, 68-yard drive that West finished with a one-yard rushing touchdown. The Grizzlies capped the scoring in the game on a 24-yard pass from junior Grant Welp (Ferdinand, Ind./Forest Park) to freshman split end Zay Thornton (Ocala, Fla./Vanguard) with 6:38 remaining in the game.

Franklin gained 427 yards of offense and scored in all six trips inside the red zone.

Cole led the receivers with six receptions, while Hession had a game-high 74 receiving yards and two scores. Hession had five catches in the victory. Linville recorded five receptions for 60 yards, while junior Dylan Jenney (Floyd Knobs, Ind./Floyd Central) also caught five passes.

Defensively, sophomore Keaton Lyons (Rensselaer, Ind./Rensselaer Central) had a team-high seven tackles, including two sacks. Senior Scott Moore (Kingman, Ind./Fountain Central) also made seven stops.

Franklin resumes conference play at Earlham College on Saturday, September 28 at 1:30 p.m.
