Men's Soccer Battles Albion to Scoreless Draw

The real winner during Friday's men's soccer match at Faught Stadium was the heat, which beat both Franklin and Albion into submission.

With heat indexes in the triple digits most of the evening and the officials stopping play every 15 minutes for hydration breaks, neither side was able to find the back of the net in a 0-0 stalemate.

The Grizzlies (0-1-1) created some chances in the first half, including a particularly dangerous on six minutes in that saw Russell Bilohlavek rifle a shot that went just wide of the right goalpost. Kelechi Mbah came off the bench in the closing minutes of the half that also narrowly missed the mark.

After the break, neither team seemed particularly sharp but the visiting Britons did manage to keep the ball in their attacking third for a good portion of the time, collecting 15 of their 17 corner kicks in the second half. Those corners helped the visitors get off 15 shots — Albion finished with a 19-6 shot advantage overall — but freshman goalie Austin Horner, who relieved classmate Austin White, kept the match even by making seven second-half saves.

The last of those came with two seconds left on the clock.

White added three first-half saves for the Grizzlies.

Franklin hits the road Sunday for an afternoon match at Heidelberg.
