Drew Helton Leads Three Grizzlies Named to All-HCAC Teams

5/6/2026 2:00:00 PM

While Franklin baseball will seek the ultimate team prize this weekend at the HCAC tournament in Kokomo, the Grizzlies were able to collect a few individual honors in advance, with a trio of players making the all-conference teams announced Wednesday.

Drew Helton was chosen to the first team and was a finalist for Player of the Year honors, while Garrett DeHart made the second team and Davis Wagner honorable mention.

Helton, a sophomore from Whiteland, Indiana who played last season at Purdue Fort Wayne, immediately established himself as one of the top players in the league. The first baseman heads into the conference tourney leading the HCAC in runs batted in (46) and doubles (a school-record 21) while also ranking in the top three in batting average (second, .403), hits (second, 60), slugging percentage (third, .685) and on-base plus slugging (third, 1.158). He hit safely in his first 28 games as a Grizzly and has been rock solid with the glove, committing just one error in 282 chances.

DeHart, a first team selection in 2024 and 2025, maintained his high level of play in his senior campaign. Third on the team with a .303 batting average, the Smyrna, Georgia native has scored 36 runs and drove in 22 across 31 games. DeHart ranked second on the squad behind Helton with 13 doubles, and he added 14 stolen bases while playing shortstop and left field and occasionally pitching.

Wagner has worn several hats in his first season with the Grizzlies, playing right field and also serving as the team's go-to relief pitcher in late high-leverage situations. The freshman is batting .333 with four home runs and 38 RBIs (good for eighth in the league). On the mound, Wagner has registered four saves and struck out 21 hitters in 25.1 innings of work.

The sixth-seeded Griz open HCAC tournament action at 10 a.m. Thursday against Rose-Hulman. With a win, Franklin would face top seed Earlham later in the day.
