Softball Keeps Rolling, Wins Two at Spalding

Want to get into a slugfest? Franklin softball welcomes those with open arms. A grind-it-out pitchers' duel? The Grizzlies can win those too.

On the road against Spalding Thursday afternoon, the Griz continued their run of outstanding play in a doubleheader sweep, coming out on top by scores of 14-4 and 2-0.

"We had a great day on both sides of the ball today," Franklin coach Britt Harvey said. "We put balls on a rope all day and brought home a shutout in game two."

The opener was tied at 2-2 after one inning before the Grizzlies (17-5) took command with a three-run second. Jaylee Fansler drove in one run with a base hit and later scored on a two-run single by Kendall Lowry. The visitors then put it away with eight runs in the fourth.

Jasmine Day got the big frame started with an RBI triple and then came home on a Fansler sacrifice fly. Liv Staigl and McKenna Lucas followed with RBI singles, and Kaylee Stewart and Day finished the onslaught with two-run doubles.

Staigl added another run-scoring single in the fifth.

Lauren Duncan got her sixth victory in the pitching circle, limiting the Golden Eagles to two runs on four hits while striking out five. Day had three of the Grizzlies' 12 hits, while Zoey Kugelman scored four runs out of the leadoff spot.

Runs were harder to come by in the nightcap, as starter Rylan Young scattered four hits while keeping the game scoreless through four innings. Franklin broke the stalemate in the top of the fifth when Kugelman singled to drive in Kaylee Stewart, and then Kugelman came on in relief to finish off the shutout. She worked three innings, allowing just two more hits, to pick up the save.

Stewart delivered an insurance run in the seventh, singling to score Brooke Lipperd. Each of those two had two of the Grizzlies' seven hits.

Franklin will try to keep things rolling through a pair of weekend doubleheaders; the Griz play at Anderson on Saturday before hosting Bluffton at Behrens Field on Sunday.
