Franklin softball cut things a little close in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Anderson — but as has been the case all season long, the Grizzlies found a way to come out on top.
Kaylee Stewart's two-out single plated
Hadley Fuhrman with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning in game two, lifting Franklin to a 5-4 comeback victory that capped a sweep of the Ravens. The Griz won the first game comfortably, 13-3.
"They fought back hard in game two," Franklin coach Britt Harvey said. "They made the choice to take on the moment and push through as a team."
The Grizzlies (19-5, 4-0 HCAC) let a 3-0 lead slip away in the nightcap, allowing Anderson to score three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. But
Ruth Kaiser drew a one-out walk in the seventh, coming home the tying run when Fuhrman doubled into the left center field gap. With the team down to its last out, Stewart ripped a 2-0 pitch down the right field line — her third hit of the game — to regain the lead.
Zoey Kugelman pitched two innings of relief for the save, dancing around a two-out walk in the seventh to close the door on the Ravens.
Franklin had built a 3-0 lead on RBI singles by
Jaylee Fansler and Liv Staigl along with an RBI groundout by
Kendall Lowry.
Jasmine Day scored a pair of runs for the Griz.
Game one saw the Grizzlies build a 5-0 cushion in the second inning, with
McKenna Lucas and Day contributing two-run singles and Kugelman plating a run with a groundout. Lucas singled in a run in the third and Fansler hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth. In the fifth, Kugelman hit an RBI double and then scored on a Raven error.
Fuhrman and Lucas each doubled in a run in the sixth and final inning, with Kugelman adding her third RBI hit. Lucas finished the game with four runs batted in.
The run support was more than enough for
Lauren Duncan, who scattered nine hits and three runs over six innings in the circle to earn her seventh win of the year.
The Grizzlies host Bluffton for a pair of conference games on Sunday afternoon (1 and 3 p.m.).
