Softball Dominates Bluffton, Improves to 21-5

Pitching your way through the Franklin softball lineup might often feel like trying to walk across a room full of snakes. Chances are that at some point, you're going to get bitten.

On Sunday, Bluffton became the latest victim of the Grizzlies' relentless attack, dropping a pair of games at Behrens Field by scores of 11-3 and 12-4.

Franklin capped off a perfect six-game week with the victories, improving to 21-5 overall and 6-0 in HCAC play.

"They're stringing it together," Griz coach Britt Harvey said. "They're finding rhythm in our lineup, and they're working hard. ... A big part of what our energy is, is the fact that it's not the same kids starting the fire every single time."

The Grizzlies continued to get production from all spots on Sunday.

Down 2-0 early in game one, the home team got three runs in the third inning to pull in front. Kendall Lowry singled in a run, and after Franklin loaded the bases Liv Staigl was hit by a pitch and Hadley Fuhrman drew a walk, making it 3-2 Griz. With the bases loaded again in the fourth, Jaylee Fansler worked a full count before ripping the eighth pitch of her at-bat into the gap in left center for a three-run double. Lowry and Ruth Kaiser added RBI singles and McKenna Lucas drove home another run with a double.

Bluffton scored one more run in the top of the fifth before the Griz walked it off. Fansler doubled to plate Jasmine Day, then came home herself on a two-bagger by Staigl.

Lauren Duncan improved to 8-2 by pitching a four-hitter, striking out seven while allowing just one earned run.

"Every single one, top to bottom, is doing what we ask of them," Harvey said. "And then on top of that, our pitching — Lauren's mindset has grown so much, and she's just ready to attack and place balls. And she understands how much control and command she has in a game. It's been super fun to watch."

In the first inning of the nightcap, Fansler got Franklin in front with an RBI double and then scored on Staigl's two-run double. Lowry had an RBI single in the second, Kaiser delivered another run on a groundout and pinch runner Alyssa Pasch scored on a passed ball to make it 6-0.

The lead grew to 10 runs in the third. Day and Fansler drew walks with the bases full before Lowry drove in two more with a double.

The Beavers got one run in the fourth and three in the fifth to keep the game alive, but the Grizzlies were able to end it in the bottom of the fifth when Lowry doubled in another run and scored on a Staigl base hit.

Rylan Young got the win in the pitching circle, improving to 7-1 on the season.

Lowry finished the day with six hits and Fansler five; they drove in six runs apiece. Staigl knocked in five runs, while Zoey Kugelman had four hits and scored five runs.

Franklin hits the road Wednesday for a doubleheader at Rose-Hulman before coming home for four weekend games.
