Softball Takes Two at Rose-Hulman

Franklin softball has played 10 games in April. It has won them all.

The Grizzlies' hot streak continued on Friday afternoon at Rose-Hulman, where they overcame two slow offensive starts and swept their way to wins by scores of 8-2 and 7-5.

Down 1-0 after three innings in the opener, Franklin (23-5, 8-0 HCAC) broke through for three runs in the top of the fourth. Ruth Kaiser worked a full count before driving Jaylee Fansler in with a base hit, and she later scored on a two-run double from Liv Staigl.

The Engineers scored a run in the fifth but the Griz got it right back on a solo homer by Fansler in the sixth. Franklin then got some separation with a four-run seventh, as Zoey Kugelman scored on an error, Jasmine Day came home on on an RBI fielder's choice by Kendall Lowry, Kaiser hit an RBI single and Staigl doubled in another run.

Lauren Duncan improved to 9-2 in the pitching circle, limiting Rose to six hits and striking out two without a walk. Fansler, Kaiser and Staigl each had two of the Grizzlies' 10 hits.

In game two, the teams traded goose eggs for five innings before the visitors plated three runs in the sixth. Day scored on a Lowry fielder's choice, a sacrifice fly from Staigl brought Fansler home and Kaylee Stewart delivered an RBI single. Franklin scored four more in the seventh as a Lowry single and a Kaiser double each knocked in a run and Staigl had her second two-run double of the day.

Rose-Hulman rallied with five unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh before Kugelman was able to close the door. The Engineers were unable to get to winning pitcher Rylan Young (8-1), who scattered six hits over six shutout innings.

Staigl had three RBIs in each contest for the Grizzlies, who continue to impress coach Britt Harvey each time out.

"I keep saying it, but this team has guts," Harvey said. "They have committed to playing for the standard we've set together, and it doesn't matter who is in the other dugout. It's about the team that's in ours."

The Griz will be at home Sunday afternoon for their final nonconference action of the season, a doubleheader against Eureka.
