Softball Streak Snapped in Senior Day Split

All winning streaks get snapped eventually. For Franklin softball, the end came Sunday afternoon at Behrens Field, where visiting Eureka held off a late rally for a 5-4 win and a doubleheader split to spoil the Grizzlies' Senior Day festivities.

Franklin had reeled off 11 straight victories, including a 13-6 triumph in the first game.

The Grizzlies (24-6) got on the board first in the opener courtesy of a first-inning RBI double by Kendall Lowry. Eureka countered with three runs in the top of the second, but Franklin tied it in the bottom of the frame with a sacrifice fly by Zoey Kugelman and a bases-loaded walk to Jaylee Fansler.

Both teams had three-run third innings. After the Red Devils pulled back in front, the Griz drew even with a two-run double by Kaylee Stewart and an RBI base hit by Kugelman.

Then, Franklin finally grabbed the lead in the fifth inning when Liv Staigl scored on a Stewart groundout and Kugelman followed with a three-run homer to right center that made it 10-6. Another two-run double by Stewart and another Kugelman sac fly in the sixth capped the scoring.

Lauren Duncan earned the relief win for the Grizzlies, pitching the final four innings without allowing a run. She gave up two hits and a walk while striking out three. Kugelman finished with six runs batted in and Stewart with five in the victory.

Down 5-0 going into the fifth inning of game two, Franklin broke its offensive drought with a solo home run by Jaylee Fansler. The Grizzlies then made a push in the sixth, scoring three runs on a Hadley Fuhrman sacrifice fly, a Stewart double and a Kugelman single to get within one, but the Red Devils escaped with two runners on base and worked around a one-out walk in the seventh to eke out the split.

Kali Laycock had three of the eight Griz hits in defeat.

Franklin returns to HCAC action on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts a doubleheader against Hanover.
