Sweet-Swinging Softball Sweeps Sewanee

Two days after being shut out in the second game of a doubleheader at Maryville, Franklin softball made sure that Thursday brought nothing resembling a repeat.

The Grizzlies had the bats going all day long at Sewanee, posting convincing 11-1 and 16-7 victories to finish out their midweek road trip.

Franklin (15-5) jumped on top in the first inning of game one, scoring five quick runs. Ruth Kaiser drew a bases-loaded walk before hits by Liv Staigl and Kaylee Stewart plated two runs each. Jaylee Fansler and Hadley Fuhrmann added RBI hits in the second, with a sacrifice fly by Staigl scoring Kristian Bond to make it 8-0.

Stewart scored on an error in the third, and Kendall Lowry capped the Griz scoring with a two-run single in the fifth inning. Sewanee's lone run came on a solo homer in the bottom of that frame.

Pitchers Lauren Duncan and Kamzi Gross combined on a five-hitter, with Duncan earning her fifth win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Grizzlies took control with a seven-run first inning. Lowry opened the sccoring with a two-run single, and Staigl, Stewart and Zoey Kugelman each added RBI base hits. Kugelman singled in a run in the second after a bases-loaded error plated three Franklin runners. Kaiser added a two-run double in the third to make it 13-1.

The home team kept the game alive with a five-run fifth inning, but the Grizzlies got an RBI groundout from Alyssa Pasch in the sixth and run-scoring hits from Brooke Lipperd and Kugelman in the seventh to ice it.

Rylan Young got the pitching victory to improve to 5-1, allowing two runs over 6.1 innings.

Kugelman had a massive seven-hit day, including a 5-for-5 effort in game two. She scored four runs and drove in three. Fansler totaled four hits, while Kaiser, Staigl and Stewart had three apiece. Franklin pounded out 28 hits in all, including 16 in the second contest.

The Grizzlies will be back on the road next Thursday for a twinbill at Spalding.
