Playing a strong Maryville team to begin its spring break week in Tennessee, Franklin softball continued to prove it belongs against the top teams on its schedule.
Paced by a two-hitter from hurler
Lauren Duncan and a three-run home run from
Jaylee Fansler, the Grizzlies opened their Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with a dominating 10-0 victory.
With two runners on following a
Zoey Kugelman base hit and a
Jasmine Day double to start game one, Fansler took a 2-1 pitch deep for her fourth home run of the season. Franklin stretched its lead to 4-0 in the second inning when
McKenna Lucas doubled to score
Ruth Kaiser.
In the third inning, Fansler doubled to score Day for a second time and later came home herself on a two-run single by Kaiser. Kaylee Steward made it an eight-run game with a sacrifice fly before Kugelman capped off the scoring with a two-run single into left center.
Duncan, meanwhile, was cruising. She worked around a single, a double and a walk, striking out one and not allowing a runner past second base in her five innings. The junior improved to 4-2 on the season.
Fansler finished the game 3 for 3 with four RBIs, while Kugelman and Kaiser each had two hits and drove in a pair.
Maryville came back to win the second game, 8-0, limiting the Franklin offense to three hits.
Now 13-5 on the spring, the Grizzlies play another twinbill at Sewanee on Thursday afternoon, with the first game slated to start at 3 p.m. EDT.
