Franklin softball coach Britt Harvey thought her team missed some golden opportunities in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against 23rd-ranked DePauw.
The Grizzlies didn't squander any in the second showdown, bouncing back from a 5-0 setback in the opener to dominate a 9-0, five-inning affair.
"We just didn't capitalize when the opportunities were there," Harvey said of the game one loss. "They turned around in game two and they showed that they can capitalize on it, and they stayed all the way through."
Two first-inning home runs got the Griz (12-4) going in the nightcap;
Zoey Kugelman led off with a solo blast to right field and
Hadley Fuhrman later ripped a two-run bomb to center, making it 3-0.
Jasmine Day singled in a run during the second, and Franklin got RBI hits in the third from
Ruth Kaiser,
McKenna Lucas and Kugelman to stretch the lead to seven. A two-run homer from
Kendall Lowry in the fourth capped the scoring.Â
Freshman
Rylan Young pitched her first career shutout, scattering six hits across five innings.
The Grizzlies got another strong pitching effort in game one from
Lauren Duncan, who battled through six innings with six strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Franklin had its chances to stay in the game, putting runners in scoring position in three different innings, but the timely hits eluded the team until the second game.
Kugelman had two hits in each game for Franklin, which will be in Tennessee this week for doubleheaders at Maryville (Tuesday) and Sewanee (Thursday).
