Women's Basketball Clinches Top-Four Spot With Road Win

Every time Franklin women's basketball has lost a game this season, it has managed to bounce back into the win column right away.

Saturday afternoon was no exception, as the Grizzlies never trailed on their way to a 76-65 victory at Berea.

With the win, Franklin (17-5, 12-3 HCAC) has clinched at least a top-four seed in the conference tournament and will host a quarterfinal game on Feb. 21.

The Grizzlies took the lead for good at 7-4 on a Jordan Coon 3-pointer and went ahead by 10 twice in the opening quarter. A Briley Munchel basket, followed by a steal and two free throws from Coon, gave the visitors their biggest cushion of the day at 35-19 with 1:28 left in the half. Berea scored the next 10 points to get within six early in the third period, and the Mountaineers got as close as 46-44 before a Molly Schulte three-point play keyed an 8-0 push late in the third that made it a 10-point gap again.

Franklin was ahead by double digits the entire fourth, maxing out at 72-52 on a Taylor Turk layup with 3:35 left.

Coon paced five Griz scorers in double figures, finishing the day with 22 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Schulte scored 16 points and handed out four assists, Munchel had12 points and Turk and Kate Breeden added 10 apiece. Payton Seay grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to help Franklin to a 49-38 advantage on the glass.

Next up for the Grizzlies is a trip to league-leading Transylvania on Wednesday evening (Feb. 11, 7 p.m.), with the winner in the driver's seat for the top seed in the HCAC tourney. Franklin was a 76-73 overtime winner in the first meeting between the teams at the Spurlock Center on Jan. 14.
