In its first meeting with reigning HCAC champion Transylvania this season, Franklin women's basketball pulled off a massive 76-73 overtime win that propelled it to the top of the HCAC.
On Wednesday night, the league's top two teams met again and the Pioneers exacted their revenge in the form of an 80-59 victory.
Franklin (17-6, 12-4) led after the first quarter, ending the period with four straight points from
Avery Kelley to pull in front by a 16-13 count. A
Payton Seay layup early in the second gave the Griz a 18-16 advantage before Transy took control with a 14-3 run.
Briley Munchel hit a 3-pointer and
Kate Breeden added a jumper in the closing seconds of the half to make it 35-31 at the break, and the Grizzlies reclaimed the lead at 40-39 on a Breeden layup with 3:58 left in the third, but the rest of the night belonged to the Pioneers, who scored the last 12 points of that quarter and opened the fourth with a 3-pointer to establish a 54-40 cushion.
Transylvania enjoyed a big advantage from outside, hitting 12 3-pointers while Franklin only attempted eight. The 24-point disparity beyond the arc was too much for the Grizzlies to make up elsewhere, especially when combined with a 49-30 rebounding deficit.
Breeden and Seay each scored 12 points for Franklin, with Breeden adding seven rebounds and four steals.
Sophia Saucerman added a career-high 11 points off the bench in 15 minutes.
Still two games up for second place in the conference with two to play, the Grizzlies can clinch the No. 2 seed in the HCAC tournament with a Senior Day win on Saturday afternoon against rival Hanover. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Spurlock Center, following the men's game.
