Women's Basketball Routs Hanover, Clinches No. 2 Seed in HCAC

In its first meeting with archrival Hanover, Franklin women's basketball took its only lead of the night on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Briley Munchel.

The Grizzlies left nothing to chance in the rematch, taking control with a 15-0 first-half run and rolling to a 78-62 Senior Day triumph Saturday afternoon at the Spurlock Center.

With the win, Franklin (18-6, 13-4 HCAC) sewed up the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, which will begin next Saturday with a home game against an opponent to be determined. They also sent seniors Kate Breeden and Jordan Coon off as winners in their final regular-season home game.

"They both played a great game today," Griz coach Ashley Blanch said. "I am proud of them and our whole team for the competitiveness they showed. We are capable of so much when we do the little things."

Franklin fell into an early 12-4 hole but scored the last seven points of the first quarter and the first eight of the second to go on top to stay at 28-20. Breeden capped that run with a 3-point shot and then an and-one with 7:10 remaining in the half.

Another 12-2 run in the third quarter extended the Grizzly lead to 19 points at 54-35, and a Munchel layup with 5:26 left in the game made it 70-43 before Franklin emptied its bench.

Coon and Breeden celebrated their day by scoring 22 and 14 points, respectively, with Taylor Turk adding 13 more off the bench. Munchel and Molly Schulte each contributed nine points, and the pair combined for nine assists. Lydia Wright had three of the team's 11 steals as the Grizzlies forced 20 turnovers.

Its postseason position set, Franklin wraps up the regular season Wednesday evening (Feb. 18, 7 p.m.) at Manchester.
