Franklin baseball held the Rhodes bats in check for the first five innings on Saturday afternoon before the host Lynx poured it on late for a 10-4 victory at the Rhodes Classic in Memphis, Tennessee.
Pitching dominated early, with neither team collecting a hit until the Grizzlies (0-2) got a one-out single from
Dyllan Redmon in the top of the fourth inning. Redmon also drove in the first run of the game, plating
Nic Deering with a sacrifice fly in the sixth to put Franklin up 1-0.
Rhodes, though, answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, four in the seventh and three more in the eighth before the Griz offense finally got going in the top of the ninth.
Davis Wagner hit a leadoff single, took second on a groundout and scored on a
Gavin Fields double to left. With the bases loaded and one out,
Josh Girvan singled to left to bring Fields home, and a two-out wild pitch allowed
Alex Billman to scamper in for the final run of the day.
Luke Harmon took the loss on the mound for the Grizzlies despite going his first 4.2 innings without surrendering a hit. He left after 5.1 frames having given up three runs on four hits. Harmon struck out five and walked four.
Redmon and Wagner each had two of the nine hits for the Grizzlies, who will wrap their opening-weekend trip on Sunday against Concordia Chicago.
