Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Ryan O'Leary, Sports Information Director

Women's Basketball Streak Ends in Upset at Anderson

Scoring wasn't an issue for Franklin women's basketball on Wednesday evening at Anderson. The inability to stop the Ravens from filling up the hoop, on the other hand, was a problem.

Anderson shot 52.9% from the floor overall (36 of 68) and hit more than half of their 3-pointers as well (12 of 23), a barrage that proved too much for the Grizzlies to overcome in a 101-86 defeat.

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak by the Griz (13-4, 8-2 HCAC) that had spanned five weeks.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Briley Munchel and Jordan Coon, followed by a Molly Schulte layup, gave the Grizzlies a 34-28 lead early in the second quarter. Anderson came back to tie the game twice late in the half before a Kate Breeden 3 with six seconds to go sent Franklin into the break with a 46-43 edge.

That lead proved to be short-lived, as the Ravens reeled off 13 straight points in under four minutes to go ahead, 58-49, with 5:24 to go in the third. The Grizzlies got back within four with 7:41 left in the game on a pair of Schulte free throws, but the home team maintained at least a two-possession lead the rest of the way, pushing its scoring total past the century mark late as Franklin fouled in an attempt to rally.

Coon and Breeden scored 23 points apiece for the Grizzlies, with the pair combining to hit eight of their 13 3-point tries; Breeden also grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Payton Seay added 13 points, Schulte 10 and Avery Kelley eight.

Franklin will try to get back on track Saturday afternoon (Jan. 24) at Earlham.
