Down 7-0 less than two minutes into Saturday afternoon's game at Rose-Hulman, Franklin women's basketball wasn't as sharp as coach
Ashley Blanch might have liked.
As has been the case over the last month, however, the funk didn't last long. The Grizzlies quickly regrouped and held on for a 79-67 victory, running its win streak to seven games as they completed their first lap through the HCAC schedule.
"We had a tough, slow start but I trust my players and captains to get us together," Blanch said. "They found their rhythm and got everyone on board."
Franklin (13-3, 8-1) scored eight points in a row, a
Cameryn Ridderikhoff layup capping the run, to take its first lead at 12-11 with 3:59 left in the opening quarter. Rose briefly pulled back in front by one before the Griz scored the last seven points of the period to go up 19-13. The Engineers got within one on a pair of occasions in the second before the visitors went into the break with a slim 33-30 edge.
Rose-Hulman came back to tie the game twice in the third quarter, the last time at 38-38, before two
Molly Schulte free throws sparked an 8-0 run that put the Grizzlies in front for good. A
Kate Breeden 3-pointer in the closing seconds made it 52-41 going into the fourth, and the Franklin read grew as large as 18 points, 71-53, on an
Avery Kelley basket with 4:57 left.
Jordan Coon had a stellar all-around game for the Griz, finishing with 21 points, six rebounds, eight assists and three steals, while Breeden added a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Ridderikhoff scored 15 points off the bench, followed by
Payton Seay with 11 and Schulte with nine.
Defensively, Franklin forced 24 turnovers, with Schulte and Kelley both matching Coon's three steals.
The Grizzlies begin their second trip through the HCAC on Wednesday (Jan. 21) with a road trip to Anderson.
