Championship season isn't here just yet in the swim world, but the Franklin College men and women got another opportunity to match themselves against some of the nation's top teams over the weekend, taking part in the Colonel Classic meet at Centre College.
Coach Zach Rayce was pleased with the results.
The Griz women placed third in the seven-team field with 615 points, beating two squads (No. 9 Milligan and No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan) ranked among the top NAIA teams in the nation. The men were fourth with 365 points.
Juniors
Kat Lundy and
Petal Sloan each had two individual victories at the meet. Lundy was first in the 100-yard backstroke (59.03 seconds) and the 200 back (2:08.01), adding a runner-up finish in the 400 individual medley (4:47.96) to tally 57 points for the team. Sloan was equally impressive, racking up 55 points with wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle races (52.93 and 1:56.86) and taking fourth in the 50 free (24.83).
"
Petal Sloan was insane," Rayce said. "Her 100 and 200 were some of the fastest swims untapered in school history."
Sloan and Lundy also joined
Celeste Hollis and
Avery Tomlinson on a 400 medley relay that finished second in 3:59.39, which Rayce believes is the first untapered sub-4:00 swim the women have ever had. That was one of three runner-up relays for the Griz women, who were also second in the 200 and 400 free relays (1:40.75 and 3:40.10).
Hollis picked up an individual win in the 100 butterfly (59.72) and was also second in the 200 fly (2:11.13) and third in the 50 free (24.80).
Alexis Fleming had the other first-place showing for the Grizzlies, taking the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 224.25 points.
Tomlinson scored 40 points and
Macie McQuinn had 26, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the mile (18:50.07) in her first time competing at that distance.
Rayce also liked what he saw from the men, who had three swimmers (
Keaton Stephenson,
Isaac Layton and
Bryson Howe) under 1:50 in the 200 freestyle. Stephenson and Howe were both under 5 minutes in the 500 free, and
Will Johnson turned in a strong showing in the 200 backstroke.
Johnson led the men with 28 individual points, followed by Layton (25), diver
Phoenix Simons (23) and Stephenson (21).
The Grizzlies shift back into dual-meet mode this coming week with a Friday evening (Jan. 16, 6 p.m.) home meet against Wabash.
