For the past few seasons, Franklin College and St. Mary's have engaged in closely contested matches against one another, and the Grizzlies' Friday night home date with the Belles was no exception.
In the end, however, it was the visitors who got the better of it on the scoreboard, finding the back of the net once in each half to come away from Faught Stadium with a 2-0 win.
The Belles broke the ice 10 and a half minutes in when an infraction inside the box led to a penalty kick for Brooke Baumann, who converted to give her team an early lead. That held through the intermission, as Franklin could only manage one shot in the first 45 minutes of play.
St. Mary's got an insurance goal in the 55th minute of action, an unassisted score from Isabella Kreydich.
The Grizzlies' attack turned up the heat after falling behind by two, and it produced its best scoring chance with about 30 minutes remaining.
Issy Pridemore and
Sydney Lovett both had shots on goal within a 36-second span, with Belles netminder Keona Caraballo turning away both. Lovett's shot did yield a rebound opportunity, but
Shelby Rendes' attempt just missed wide of the net.
Goalkeeper
Emma Watson made three saves for Franklin. St. Mary's ended the night with a 10-4 advantage in overall shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
Franklin next travels to DePauw for a nonconference clash on Wednesday, Sept. 3.
