Difficulties with putting the ball in the net plagued Franklin women's soccer throughout last season. As a team loaded with newcomers gets familiar with one another, those offensive struggles have continued.
Coming up empty on the scoreboard for the second time in as many matches, the Grizzlies dropped a 2-0 road match against rival DePauw on Wednesday evening.
Franklin (0-2) got shots on goal from
Madison Hill and
Aaniylah Reese in the first half but couldn't crack the seal on the Tigers' goal. Fortunately, despite an 8-2 disadvantage in total shots, the Grizzlies managed to go into the half with the match still scoreless.
DePauw (3-0) turned up the heat in the second half, though, and finally broke the ice on a Sophia Grueninger tally in the 51st minute of action. An insurance tally by Macy Happe with 16:09 left sealed the Grizzlies' fate.
The setback overshadowed a heroic effort from Franklin goalkeeper
Emma Watson, who finished the night with a career-high 12 saves in a losing effort. The Grizzlies were outshot 19-2 overall on the night.
Next up for the Grizzlies is a home match against Muskingum on Saturday after the conclusion of the season-opening football game against Ohio Northern.
