FRANKLIN – The Franklin College baseball team looked for a weekend series win on Saturday (Mar. 8) with two games against Hope College at John P. McDowell Field.
After dropping the opener 12-2, the Grizzlies (4-3) relied on their patience at the plate to draw 23 free passes and earn a 26-7 win in seven innings.
Game One: Hope 12 – Franklin 2 (8 inn.)
The Flying Dutch raced out to a big lead early with two runs in the second, four in the fourth and three in the fifth sparking their lead. Franklin grabbed a run in the fourth on an RBI double from
Andrew Wallace and added their second in the seventh on an RBI ground out from
Jordan DeAtley, but the Griz could manage only five hits in total in the opener.
Luke Harmon (0-1) got the start in the opener and tossed four innings of four-hit ball. Wallace finished with two of the Grizzlies' five hits and was the lone player to record a multi-hit game.
Game Two: Franklin 26 – Hope 7 (7 inn.)
The Grizzlies got the early jump in game two with a four-run first, getting RBI singles from
Garrett DeHart and
Riddick Bolton. Hope responded with a four-spot of their own in the second, but Franklin's second trip to the dish produced a 10-run frame that put the contest out of reach. Bolton and
Luke Willmann each produced RBI singles and Wallace cleared the bases with a three-run double and Franklin drew six free passes to make it 14-4 after two frames.
Franklin tacked on five more in the fourth and six in the sixth, with just three of those runs coming courtesy of base hits.
Wallace, Bolton, Willmann, DeHart,
Quentcy Perry and
Colin Goley all drove in multiple runs in game two. Bolton scored four times and Wallace crossed home three times in the game. The Grizzlies finished 16 walks, one off the program record for most in a single game, and had seven other batters reach via hit by pitch.
Brayden Marrow got the start and allowed two earned runs over 3.2 innings.
Brayton Belcher (1-0) picked up the first win of his career with 1.1 innings of work in relief.
