For more than 70 minutes on Wednesday night, Franklin men's soccer kept itself within striking distance on the road against Rose-Hulman.
The dam broke down the stretch, though, with the Engineers scoring four times in less than five minutes to pull away for a 5-0 victory.
The Grizzlies (1-10, 0-3 HCAC) kept the match scoreless until the 41st minute, when Rose's Noah Hutter finally got a shot past Franklin netminder
Easton Terry. The visitors nearly overcame a 15-1 first-half deficit in shots, including an 8-0 differential in attempts on goal. Terry made seven of his eight saves before intermission.
After halftime, the Engineers continued to pile up scoring chances but were unable to extend their advantage until 18:50 remained in the match. That second goal appeared to open the floodgates, though, and once the 76th minute began Rose-Hulman hammered home three more goals in a 62-second span to put the match away.
Prior to that decisive stretch, Franklin coach
Josh Hughes had seen some positives from his squad.
"Organizationally, we were better today," he said. "That's why we were able to stay in the game. We lacked quality, though. We gave the ball away cheaply consistently when we had chances to break.
"If we can start to take advantage of those opportunities and can maintain the organization we had today, we can find some success."
Enzo Crivari had the lone shot attempt for the Grizzlies, who will be back on the road Saturday afternoon against Anderson.
