Rose-Hulman wasn't able to do much to stop the attack from Franklin women's volleyball on Wednesday evening — but too often, the Grizzlies wound up slowing themselves.
Some self-inflicted wounds at inopportune times — headlined by 15 service errors — the visitors wound up doomed to a 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-21 setback against the Engineers.
"Tonight was an up and down night for us," Grizzlies coach
Dillon Taylor said. "We had a lot of really good moments but also had a lot of inconsistency."
Franklin (13-11, 2-2 HCAC) stayed steady enough to win a back-and-forth first set. Senior
Hope Moring had four early kills to help spot the Grizzlies an 8-2 lead before Rose-Hulman took control and eventually pulled ahead by a 19-14 margin. The Engineers still led 23-20 before Franklin charged back to score the next five points, with
Brionna Linkel contributing an ace to go along with kills by
McKenzie Schroeder and
Kaitlyn Lavy.
In set two, the Grizzlies led 20-19 before letting the final six points slip away. The visitors gave up four aces in the set while also committing six attacking errors and two service errors. The third set was derailed by seven attacking errors and five service errors, including one on the decisive point.
"When we served the ball in the court, we won points," Taylor said.
The Grizzlies led at several points in the fourth set, the last at 20-19 — but Rose's Emma Blanton had kills on five of her team's last six points, powering her team to the finish line. Blanton finished with 14 kills on the night.
For Franklin, Moring had a double-double with 14 kills and 13 assists, while
Leah Middleton added eight kills and
Lauren Kinsey contributed four blocks. Linkel had 22 assists and three aces, and
Campbell Clark totaled 16 digs.
Next up for the Grizzlies is a Saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) home match against Berea.
