A year ago, Franklin women's volleyball might've let consecutive conference losses break their spirit. This edition of the Grizzlies are proving a bit more resilient.
On the heels of two disappointing league matches, Franklin made quick work of Berea in a 25-11, 25-21, 25-12 sweep at the Spurlock Center on Saturday afternoon.
"Today was a great day for our program," Griz coach
Dillon Taylor said. "Coming off of a tough loss missing 15 serves, we really challenged the team to be better behind the line. They attacked with purpose, continually getting (Berea) out of system. That made it really hard to score for them, because their best attacker was the middle."
Franklin (14-11, 3-2 HCAC) gradually pulled away in the first set, with four kills from
McKenzie Schroeder keying a run that took it from 12-8 to 21-10. The second set was the most competitive, with the Mountaineers fighting off four set points at 24-17 before an attacking error sealed their fate.
In the third, the Grizzlies stormed out to an 11-2 lead behind a kill and two aces from
Leah Middleton, and they weren't threatened again. Franklin scored six of the last seven points, with
Hope Moring delivering kills on the final two.
Schroeder led a balanced attack for the home team with nine kills, while Moring and
Kaitlyn Lavy added eight apiece. Middleton had six kills and paced the team with three aces and eight digs, with classmate
Lauren Kinsey totaling seven kills and three blocks.
The Grizzlies are back at Spurlock Wednesday (Oct. 29) against HCAC co-leader Earlham.
