Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Ryan O'Leary, Sports Information Director

Women's Volleyball Runs Win Streak to Four

A brief speed bump in the first set Tuesday night could only slow Franklin women's volleyball so much.

The Grizzlies shook off the opening-set loss with no trouble, dominating the rest of the way for a 23-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-20 road win over Spalding.

"We played really well in sets two through four," Franklin coach Dillon Taylor said after his team won for the fourth straight match and eighth time in the last 10. "This match was really easy for us to fall into the trap. Nonconference match on a Tuesday after homecoming. ... After set one, we challenged them to flip the switch and find another gear. These athletes continue to rise to the challenge."

Franklin (13-9) let a 16-12 lead slip away in the first set, then had consecutive errors at set's end after rallying to tie it at 23-23. But with the second set deadlocked at 7-7, the Grizzlies scored six of the next seven points to pull ahead for good. Mireily Colomba had two kills and Lauren Kinsey one during that surge.

Kinsey finished with seven kills and seven blocks on the night, with Taylor calling her "a monster at the net." The play of her and Colomba in the middle helped open things up on the outside, and the Griz hitters took advantage.

In the third set, the Grizzlies played error-free ball, hitting .619 and leading comfortably throughout after taking an early 8-2 lead. Kaitlyn Lavy had five of her 12 kills in the set and Hope Moring added four of her 14.

The final set saw Spalding erase most of an early deficit, clawing back to 19-18, before Franklin scored the next four points. Charlotte Goto served a pair of aces to go with kills by Leah Middleton and McKenzie Schroeder in that mini-run, and Schroeder added another kill for the last point.

Schroeder and Middleton both matched Kinsey's seven kills on a balanced offensive night. Moring had 19 assists, Brionna Linkel 14 and Jayde Billings 11, while Campbell Clark pulled up 14 digs.

"I continue to be incredibly proud of our effort levels and willingness to be amazing teammates," Taylor said. "Our energy is incredible on the bench, on the court and throughout the program."

The Grizzlies return to HCAC action on Friday night with a home match against Hanover. The action from the Spurlock Center begins at 7 p.m.
