FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Franklin women's basketball team claimed a wild win over Rose-Hulman on Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon, scoring three points in the final four seconds to take a 65-64 decision.
Â
Briley Munchel tied the game with a hook shot with four seconds to go and
Taylor Cooney capped the win in the final second of the game with a free throw to give the Grizzlies (12-4, 6-3 HCAC) their fourth straight win over the Engineers (7-9, 4-5 HCAC). In a game that saw 12 lead changes and 15 ties, it was only natural it came down to the final seconds of action.
Â
How it Happened
Both teams exchanged jabs in the first quarter, neither leading by more than one possession with Rose taking a 22-18 lead into the second quarter. Franklin's defense ramped up the aggressiveness in the second quarter, holding Rose to only eight points. But the Engineers matched that intensity on defense, keeping the Grizzlies to 10 points in the period and taking a 30-28 lead into the break.
Â
Rose-Hulman comes out of the half hot and extended their lead to seven early in the third quarter, a number that would be a game-high for either side. Facing a 42-35 deficit, Franklin was able to claw back with a 9-0 run, powered by eight points from
Erica Buening to take a 44-2 lead. The teams headed into the fourth tied at 48, setting up a dramatic final 10 minutes.
Â
The game stayed within one possession the entire final quarter and saw seven lead changes and four ties. With 32 seconds left Jamie Baum gave Rose-Hulman the lead with a jumper to make it 63-61. The teams traded 1-for-2 trips to the line and with four seconds left, Munchel knocked down a hook shot to tie the game up.
Â
The Engineers had a look at the game-winning bucket, but Emma Schipp's layup missed the mark and the Schipp fouled Cooney on the rebound with less than a second to go, giving Cooney two free throws. The senior guard knocked down the first and missed the second, not giving the Engineers enough time to get a shot away.
