COLUMBUS, Miss. - The spring seasons got underway on Saturday (Feb. 17), with the Franklin softball team traveling south for meetings against Covenant and Millsaps.
The Grizzlies (2-0) scored in every single inning across both games, beating Covenant 10-2 (6 inn.) and hammering Millsaps 8-0 (5 inn.).
Game One: Franklin 10 – Covenant 2 (6 inn.)
Eriana Wagner led off the season with a single and came in to score one batter later on a throwing error. A second Covenant error in the inning led to a second run and
Genesis Munoz drove in the team's first run of the year, capping a three-run first inning.
Molly Wallace stretched the lead to 4-0 with an RBI single in the second, with back-to-back RBI hits from Wagner and
Hadley Fuhrman making it a 6-0 game through three Franklin trips to the plate. Covenant got their two runs in the bottom of the third, but a
Kennedy Bond RBI double in the fourth and another run coming on a Covenant error in the fifth restored Franklin's six-run lead. The sixth saw
Karrsen Pruitt drive in the first run of her career with a double and
Abri Carey knocking in a run with a single to cap the scoring.
Wagner went 4-for-4 with three runs scored from the leadoff spot. Munoz and
Kaylee Stewart had two hits each and Franklin pounded Covenant pitching for 17 total hits.
In the circle,
Stephanni Kleber (1-0) tossed all six innings, scattering six hits and striking out five.
Game Two: Franklin 8 – Millsaps 0 (5 inn.)
Franklin struck in the bottom of the first with Munoz driving in
Molly Wallace with a two-out single for a lead the Grizzlies would keep the rest of the way. The Grizzlies got more clutch hitting in the second to extend their lead, with Wagner and Stewart driving in runners with consecutive two-out singles to make it 3-0.
Skylar Weber made it 5-0 with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the third and freshman
Abbey Martin put Millsaps away in the fourth, crushing a three-run home run in the first start of her career.
All that offense was more than enough for freshman
Lauren Duncan (1-0), who scattered three hits and struck out four without allowing a walk in the first start of her career. Wallace, Munoz and freshman
Ruth Kaiser all finished with two hits.
