FRANKLIN - For the second time in a week, the Franklin women's basketball team took on long-time rival Hanover College with the second contest taking place in the Spurlock Center on Wednesday (Jan. 24) night.
The Grizzlies (11-7, 6-5 HCAC) got a career-high 27 points from sophomore
Jordan Coon, but Franklin dropped their matchup to the Panthers (12-6, 10-1 HCAC) by a 75-70 result.
The two offenses came out flying in the first period, with both teams shooting better than 50% in the first 10 minutes and Hanover leading 22-21 after a quarter. The second period saw the two defenses take over, with Franklin taking a 29-28 lead into the break after holding the Panthers to 1-for-18 shooting in the second.
The Panthers grabbed the lead early in the third quarter and led by a game-high nine at 47-38 late in the period. Franklin battled back with a 10-0 run that was halted at the buzzer to give Hanover a 49-48 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Panthers stretched their lead to as many as eight in the fourth quarter and were able to fend off any late game push from the Grizzlies.
Coon went 11-for-15 from the field and 2-for-5 from three to surpass her previous career-high of 26.
Taylor Cooney joined her in double figures with 10 points to help a Franklin offense that shot 45.9% (28-for-61) on the night.
Kate Breeden pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds as Franklin held a 38-35 advantage in rebounding. Franklin held the advantage in points in the paint (44-32), fast break points (24-17) and bench points (45-8), but the Panthers closed out the game with 21 made free throws to 11 for the hosts.
Franklin is back at home on Saturday (Jan. 27) to host women's basketball Alumni Day with a matchup against the Defiance Yellow Jackets. Tip-off from the Spurlock Center is set for 1:00 p.m.
