FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin College softball team hosted their first conference games of the year on Saturday (Apr. 8) afternoon, welcoming the Anderson Ravens to Behrens Field for a double-header.
The Grizzlies (18-8, 1-3 HCAC) bounced back from a tough 5-3 loss in extras in game one to take game two from the Ravens (4-16, 1-3 HCAC) 7-2 and earn their first league win of the campaign.
Game One: Anderson 5 – Franklin 3 (8 inn.)
The opener saw the Ravens take a 1-0 lead while the Grizzlies let chances to get the game's first run elude them in both the second and third innings, respectively. Franklin broke through in the bottom of the sixth when
Sydney Rodeghier drew a bases-loaded walk, but the hosts left the bags full in the sixth and stranded two more in the seventh to send the game to extras tied 1-1.
The eighth inning saw Anderson plate four runs but Franklin halved the deficit in their part of the inning with back-to-back RBI singles from Rodeghier and
Annie Kluemper, bringing the winning run to the plate with one out. But the Ravens wiggled out of the jam, halting the Griz' rally by getting the next two out.
Kluemper and
Molly Wallace had three hits each, but the Grizzlies left 14 runners on base in the game.
Sydney Pitts (6-5) went the distance in the circle, giving up two earned runs and striking out three.
Game Two: Franklin 7 – Anderson 2
Genesis Munoz delivered the game's first run with a sac fly in the first. Rodeghier knocked in her third run of the day in the second and an Anderson error in the third allowed the Grizzlies to stretch their lead to 3-0 through three frames.
The lead continued to grow in the fourth as Kluemper belted an RBI double, Wallace drove home two with a double and
Ravyn McClaren knocked home one with a single to make it a 7-0 game through four innings. Anderson plated both of their runs in the fifth but couldn't generate any more off Franklin starter
Stephanni Kleber over the final two innings.
Kleber (9-3) gave up one earned run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the circle. Rodeghier and Kluemper had three hits each at the top of the lineup and Wallace went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
