RECAP | Munoz, Wagner Go Deep on Sunday as Softball Splits Twin Bill with Kalamazoo

FRANKLIN – The Franklin College softball team hosted the Kalamazoo Hornets on Sunday (Mar. 5) afternoon for the second of three straight home dates at Behrens Field.

The Grizzlies (7-1) dropped their first contest of the year in the opener, falling to the Hornets (1-1) in extra innings 4-3. Game two saw the hosts secure a split with dominant pitching and timely hitting in a 5-1 victory.

Game One: Kalamazoo 4 – Franklin 3 (8 inn.)
Down by a run in the first, the Grizzlies got on the board in a loud way when Genesis Munoz clubbed a two-out pitch over the left field wall for a two-run home run and an early 2-1 lead for the home side. The Grizzlies loaded the bases with one out in the second, but squandered the scoring chance and the Hornets made it hurt with a two-run fourth inning to make it a 3-2 game.

Franklin's offense remained dormant until the bottom of the seventh, when a leadoff walk turned into the tying run as pinch-runner Reanne Brinker scored on a wild pitch to send the game to extras. But a two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth would give the Hornets the lead for good as Franklin's rally stalled in the bottom of the inning.

Kaylee Stewart went 3-for-4 and was joined by Sydney Rodeghier and her two hits as the only Grizzlies with multiple base knocks. Sydney Pitts (2-1) went the distance in the circle, scattering 10 hits and striking out two.

Game Two: Franklin 5 – Kalamazoo 1
For the second straight game, Franklin utilized the long ball to take an early lead. Eriana Wagner stepped up in the second and smashed a two-run shot over the center field wall to five Franklin a 2-0 lead, giving her long balls on back-to-back days.

The Hornets cut the lead in half in the fourth but Franklin got that run right back in the bottom of the inning when Wagner brought in a run with a sac fly. Annie Kluemper plated a run with a sac fly in the fifth and Ravyn McClaren drove home an insurance run in the sixth to cap the scoring.

It was more than enough support for starter Stephanni Kleber (4-0), who allowed one run on three hits with one walk and five punch-outs in a complete game effort.
