RECAP | Grizzlies Split Saturday Twin Bill with Hope College

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Franklin College baseball team welcomed the Flying Dutch of Hope College to Center Grove HS on Saturday (Mar. 4) for two games between a pair of 2022 regular season conference champions.

The Grizzlies (4-2) and the Dutch (2-2) split the twin bill, with Hope taking the opener in 10 inning 14-12 and Franklin battling back to win game two 5-4.

Game One | Hope 14 – Franklin 12 (10 inn.)
The Dutch plated seven runs in their first trip to the plate, putting the Griz in a deep hole early. Franklin wasted no time beginning to battle back, getting two runs in the bottom of the first with a two-run double from Adam Taylor.

AJ Sanders belted a solo shot in the second and added a two-run double in the fourth to cut the Hope lead to 7-5. Sanders stayed hot and cut the lead to one with an RBI triple in the sixth and two innings later, Franklin held the lead with an RBI single from Colby Reed, another RBI triple from Sanders and a sac fly from Tysen Lipscomb.

The Dutch got two to tie the game in the ninth and plated five runs in the 10th. Sean Sullivan clubbed a three-run blast in the bottom of the 10th but the rally ended one batter later.

Sanders finished the game 4-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored. Taylor went 2-for-4 on the day and Reed finished with three runs scored.

Jackson Young tossed eight innings of brilliant ball in relief of starter Dylan Sprong. Young scattered seven hits and fanned four in his longest career relief outing.

Game Two | Franklin 5 – Hope 4
Franklin got on the board in the bottom of the first when Noah Wood crushed a two-out, three-run home run to put Franklin in front for good. The Dutch got a run back in the fourth but Wood restored the three-run lead with a solo home run in the fifth to make it a 4-1 game.

Hope plated two runs in their half of the seventh but Wood made it 5-3 Franklin in the bottom of the frame when he scored on a wild pitch. The Dutch got another run in the eighth but Maddox Manes set the guests down in order in the ninth to close out the win and earn his first career save.
