RECAP | Moring, Lavy Power Griz Offense in Home Opening Win Over Spalding

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin College volleyball team made their Spurlock Center debut on Thursday (Sept. 8) night, hosting the Spalding Golden Eagles in the first of seven home contests this season.
 
Powered by a pair of freshman pin hitters, the Grizzlies (2-3) notched double-digit kills in all four sets to overpower the Golden Eagles (0-2) and win in four sets, 25-14, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16.
 
Hope Moring set a season-high with 16 kills and fellow newcomer Kaitlyn Lavy had 13 put aways to pace an attack that had 55 totals kills and a .234 attacking percentage on the night.
 
How it Happened
It was all Grizzlies in the first set, as they rushed out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back. Franklin hit .162 in the opening set and held the Golden Eagles to -.030 on the attack in a dominant game one showing.
 
Spalding drew even in the second game and the pivotal third set sat tied at 18 before Franklin closed out the set with a 7-1 run to grab a 2-1 lead in the match. Franklin hit .400 in the third game with Lavy putting away five kills in the set. After falling behind 4-0 to start the fourth set, the Grizzlies rallied back and put the game away with a 9-3 run to close out their opponent.
 
Inside the Box Score
-Moring's 16 kills are tops in a game for all Franklin attackers this season. In addition, the Butler, Ind.-native added a season-high 14 digs to record her first double-double of the season.
-Lavy hit a season-best .270 and recorded her third straight game with double digit kills. The Avon, Ind.-native topped the team with five aces.
-Senior setter Billie Jarrett guided the Franklin offense with 42 assists and led the team with 16 digs.
-The middle of the Franklin net got it done on both sides of the ball. Chloe Holder had nine kills and Alyssa Zemlyak put down eight kills with a .636 hitting percentage. Both juniors had two solo blocks and three block assists.

The Grizzlies hit the road on Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon, traveling to Kentucky to meet the Asbury Eagles. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
