Box Score FRANKLIN, Ind. – On Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon, the Franklin women's lacrosse team opened their 2021 slate on a balmy day at Faught Stadium against the Benedictine Eagles.
The young Grizzlies (0-1) got off to a fast start and held a halftime lead over the Eagles (1-1). But Franklin's offense would manage just one goal over the final 30 minutes and the Eagles mounted a comeback to take a 10-9 win.
The opening 90 seconds featured three Grizzly goals with Victoria Simmons, Anya Glodowski and Mia Turnbaugh all finding the back of the net. A Benedictine goal shortly after stopped the run but Bayleigh Riddle answered with her first tally to make it 4-1 Franklin with 24:33 to play in the opening half.
Three straight Benedictine goals followed before back-to-back tallies from Glodowski and Turnbaugh put Franklin back in front by a pair midway through the half. Sydney Briggs and Lora Adkins would find the net late in the opening half and Franklin took an 8-6 advantage into the break.
Adkins added her second goal of the game 1:35 into the second half, but Franklin's offense would dry up the rest of the way. The Eagles potted the final four goals of the game and late game-tying attempts from Glodowski and Abbey Voss couldn't find the twine.
Glodowski and Adkins both had two goals and an assist, leading the team with three points each. Turnbaugh, Briggs and Riddle all notched their first career goals and were three of eight Franklin players making their career debuts.
Riddle's seven draw controls led all players while Turnbaugh, Adkins and Glodowski tied for the team lead with four ground balls each. Adkins and Kara Woodard forced three turnovers each and Courtney Jones had 20 saves in goal for Franklin.
The Grizzlies are off until Wednesday, Mar. 10, when they're back at home taking on the Alma Scots. The opening draw is set for noon.
