Technical difficulties at Faught Stadium threw off the routine a bit for Franklin women's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon. They did not, however, take the fight out of the Grizzlies.
Down big early on Senior Day, the Griz fell prey to a commanding performance by Spalding goalie Whitney White in a 19-5 loss at Faught Stadium.
"Their goalie was really good," Franklin coach Morgan Krause said of White. "I feel like she was the main portion of their defense. ... Usually we're able to build momentum with our goals. Usually we get one or two off, and then everyone's hyped and we can go. This game was hard, because their goalie was really good."
That was particularly true in the first half, when the Grizzlies (2-5, 0-1 HCLC) put 12 shots on goal to Spalding's 16 but went into the break down by double digits because White came up with 10 saves. The Golden Eagles took advantage, building an 8-0 lead after one quarter before Franklin got on the scoreboard on a free position shot by
Abby Moore with 12:17 on the second-quarter clock.
Claire Ecenbarger added a man-up goal a minute and a half later, beating White with a spectacular shot from the left side, to cut it to 8-2, but Spalding answered with five more goals before halftime to go ahead by 11. Franklin got one goal from
Addie Whitman in the third period and then got tallies from Moore and Ecenbarger in the fourth.
Sophie Taylor made seven saves in goal for the Grizzlies, with
Anna Kute adding one in her goaltending debut after Taylor briefly exited in the second quarter.
The loss didn't dampen Krause's feelings about the efforts of the club's two seniors,
Maddie Cary and
Gabby Cunningham, in their final home game.
"I thought they played phenomenal," the coach said.
The Grizzlies will try to get back on track next Saturday (April 18) when they travel to Hanover for another HCLC contest.
