Box Score FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin men's basketball team was back in action inside the Spurlock Center on Saturday (Feb. 13) afternoon, hosting the Mount St. Joseph Lions
For the second straight game, four Grizzlies (5-5) reached double digit point totals but Franklin fell victim a sharp-shooting Lions (2-10) team that knocked down 12 three-pointers to earn a 75-72 comeback road win.
The hosts struck first with eight straight points to open the game, but the Lions would respond with an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the day with 12:17 to go in the opening half. The two sides stayed within a possession until late in the first half, with the Grizzlies taking a 36-29 lead into the break. The Grizzlies held the Lions to just 10 first half field goals, with six of those coming behind the three-point line.
Franklin's lead grew to its biggest of the day at 43-33 when Sam Gutierrez buried a turnaround jumper and forced a Mount timeout. That timeout proved to be exactly what the Lions needed, as they clawed back to take the lead with 11 minutes to play.
Back-to-back buckets from Ismail Jones and Ty Wright gave Franklin a 62-58 lead with five minutes to play, but the Lions refused to go away and took the lead with 35 seconds to play. The Grizzlies had a look at the tying bucket late, but Gutierrez's go-ahead triple hit back iron and allowed the Lions to close the game at the line.
Gutierrez topped the Grizzlies with 20 points and handed out a team-high four assists. He was joined in double figures by Wright (13 pts), Jones (12 pts) and Matt Krause's 12 points and 13 boards.
Rebounds were 43-25 in Franklin's favor, with the Grizzlies pulling down 14 offensive boards that led to 15 second chance points.
The Grizzlies will head out on the road for the final time in the regular season on Friday (Feb. 19) night, taking on the Manchester Spartans. Tip-off is set for approximately 8:00 p.m.
