RECAP | Morris Reaches 1,000-Point Milestone in Grizzlies' Win Over Lions

Box Score

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Franklin College senior Kale Morris became the latest member of the 1,000-point club on Wednesday (Feb. 19) night, helping the Grizzlies to an 83-73 win over Mount St. Joseph inside the Spurlock Center.

The Frankfort, Ind.-native scored all 12 of his points in the first half, hitting the milestone with his final basket of the game late in the period. He was one of four Grizzlies (16-8, 12-5 HCAC) to finish the night in double figures as Franklin shook off a slow start to rally back and complete a season sweep of the Lions (6-18, 4-13 HCAC).

Early on, it was all Lions as the Mount scored the game's first eight points and led by as many as nine when a Tanner Clos layup made it 17-8 with 12:36 to go in the half. The Grizzlies would shake off the deficit over the next five minutes, taking their first lead of the night when a Borden Kennedy layup made it 25-24 Franklin with 7:21 to go before the break.

A 15-4 Franklin run stretched the host's lead to 40-30 with three minutes to go in the half, marking the largest lead of the first half for either side. Franklin took a 44-36 lead into the locker room at halftime, shooting 62.1% (18-for-29) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

The Lions fought back to within four early in the second half, making it a 48-44 game with 16 minutes to play. That ended up being as close as the Lions would get the rest of the night, as each time they tried to make a run, the Grizzlies had an answer. Ahead by five after a Mount three, Danny Goggans finished off a three-point play to stretch the lead to 57-49 with 12 minutes to play.

Goggans was a critical part of Franklin's second half, with the Indianapolis, Ind.-native scoring 15 of his season-high 17 points over the final 20 minutes of play. Franklin would lead by as many as 11 points before the final horn sounded, knocking down half of their field goals over the final half of play.

Sam Gutierrez had a team-high 18 points and Kennedy added 14 for the Grizzlies, who shot 55.9% (33-for-59) from the floor as a team. Goggans grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as Franklin held a 32-29 edge on the glass. As a team, the Grizzlies controlled play inside, recording a season-high 58 points in the paint.

The Grizzlies close out the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 22), when they welcome the Defiance Yellow Jackets to the Spurlock Center as part of a Senior Day double-header. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
