RECAP | Grizzlies Drop Regular Season Home Finale to Transylvania

Box Score

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin women's basketball team stepped on their home floor for the final time this season on Wednesday (Feb. 14) night, taking on the Transylvania Pioneers on Senior Night inside the Spurlock Center.

The Grizzlies (7-16, 6-11 HCAC) struggled from the floor all night long, connecting on just 23.4 percent (15-for-64) of their field goals on the night in a 65-39 defeat at the hands of the Pioneers (19-5, 14-3 HCAC).

Junior Mallory Cast led the Grizzlies with 11 points off the bench while freshman Bayleigh Walker added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the year.

"It came down to execution tonight," Head coach Dana Haggenjos said. "We missed a few shots early on and that got in our head and our players were thinking about it every time they had a chance to shoot. It's a tough way to close out our home schedule but we have to put this behind and get ready to play on Saturday."

The Grizzlies' struggles started early, as Franklin went just 2-for-14 from the floor in the opening quarter, allowing the Pioneers to take a 15-5 lead after one quarter of play. Franklin's struggles continued in the second quarter, as the Grizzlies recorded one field goal until the final minute of the half, when back-to-back threes from Cast cut the Pioneers' lead to 28-13 after 20 minutes of play.

A strong third quarter from the Pioneers would put the game out of reach. Transylvania out-scored the Grizzlies 18-10 in the third frame to extend their lead to 46-23 with just 10 minutes to play. Franklin would have their most successful period on offense in the fourth, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers' lead would hold up.

The Pioneers connected on 45 percent (27-for-60) of their field goals on the night. Rebounds were 48-40 in favor of Transylvania, with the Grizzlies holding a 22-16 advantage on the offensive glass. Franklin held a 19-15 edge in the turnover battle and a 15-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Grizzlies close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon, hitting the road to take on Bluffton University. The Grizzlies will enter Saturday's game as one of four teams battling for the final two spots in the HCAC tournament. Franklin enters the final day of the regular season tied with Manchester, Mount St. Joseph and Earlham in the conference standings.

Tip-off from Bluffton, Ohio is set for 2:00 p.m.
