Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball team earned a dominating 70-34 victory over Defiance College to begin Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play on Saturday from the Spurlock Center.
The Grizzlies had three double-figure scorers and held a 49-32 rebounding edge in the contest. Two players recorded 10 rebounds, while the defense held the Yellow Jackets to 21.2 percent shooting.
Franklin (4-1, 1-0 HCAC) started the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back. The Grizzlies led 20-6 after the first quarter. The hosts scored 20 more points in the second quarter and led 40-17 at the break.
The team's 70 points scored are a season high.
Senior Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) led the offensive attack with 22 points and 10 rebounds. It is her fourth straight double-double. Brewer recorded three blocks in the victory.
Junior Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) added 15 points and four assists. Classmate Kayle Comer (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) had 10 points for the Grizzlies.
Junior Amber May (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) scored five points, but grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to lead the reserves. Eleven Franklin players saw game action, including 10 with 10 or more minutes. The Grizzlies had 10 different scorers for the balanced offensive attack.
Franklin returns to action on Wednesday, December 9, at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in HCAC action from the Spurlock Center.
