Playing its second road game in less than 24 hours, Franklin women's basketball got off to a strong start at Webster on Saturday afternoon, but the host Gorloks had the last word, taking over in the second half to hand the Grizzlies an 82-61 defeat in the consolation game of the Angel Saddler Tip-Off Classic.
The Grizzlies (0-2) got out to a 21-14 lead on the strength of a good first quarter from soph
Cameryn Ridderikhoff and senior
Payton Seay, and consecutive layups by
Avery Kelley and
Sophia Saucerman midway through the second quarter made it 29-21 with 5:21 to go in the half. Webster, though, responded with a 14-4 surge and took a slim 37-35 advantage into the locker room.
A Seay basket in the middle of the third period had Franklin still within striking distance at 47-42, but the Gorloks scored the next nine points to build a double-digit cushion that lasted the remainder of the day.
Franklin hit 7 of its 12 first-quarter shots but cooled from there, going 15 for 43 (34.9%) the rest of the way.Â
Seay finished with 12 points for the Grizzlies, while Ridderikhoff and Kelley added 10 apiece.
Molly Schulte contributed nine points and team highs of five assists and three steals.
The Griz will be on the road for another tournament next week, the Briton Battle at Albion. They'll open against John Carroll on Friday evening (Nov. 13, 5 p.m.).
