Box Score 2 North Manchester, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team improved to 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a four-set victory over Manchester University on Saturday.
The Grizzlies (11-5, 2-0 HCAC) lost in four sets to St. Mary's College (Ind.) in the second match on Saturday from North Manchester, Indiana.
Franklin rebounded from dropping the opening set 25-18 to win the following three frames 25-21, 25-19, and 25-22 against the Spartans.
Freshman Brooke Harvey (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion) led the team's balanced offensive attack with 11 kills. Junior Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) added 10 kills compared to just one hitting error. Settle also had eight blocks in the victory.
Senior Jordan Finke (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) chipped in eight kills and had five blocks. Junior Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) recorded seven kills.
Sophomore Ashley Bazier (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South) had 38 assists and 11 digs defensively. She also had a team-high two serving aces.
Junior Mackenzie Wieneke (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) led the defensive effort with 26 digs.
Against St. Mary's, the team captured the second set 25-23 after losing the opening frame 26-24. St. Mary's (6-6) won the remaining two sets 25-19 and 25-15 to secure the victory.
Finke led the offensive attack with 10 kills, while Harvey and Young each added eight kills.
Bazier tallied 29 assists and recorded 12 digs. Wieneke led the defensive effort with 17 digs and freshman Carrigan Peak (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) added 10 digs.
Franklin returns to action on Tuesday, September 30 at 6:30 p.m. when it travels to Hanover College for a non-conference match.
