Primarily a serving specialist for the first half of the season,
Lily Gena has broadened her horizons a bit in October.
Thrust into the full-time libero role less than two weeks ago, the Franklin women's volleyball sophomore was named HCAC Defensive Player of the Week after a pair of rock-solid performances on the back row over the weekend.
Gena didn't start the first set at Bluffton on Saturday afternoon but took over in the second, pulling up 22 digs to help the Griz rally for a four-set victory. Immediately thereafter, she collected a career-high 33 digs in a five-set marathon against Ohio Northern. The Munster, Indiana native added nine assists and three service aces on the day.
For the season, Gena now has 120 digs and ranks second on the team in service aces with 33.
The Grizzlies, whose 17 wins thus far match their highest season total since 2005, will play at HCAC leader Earlham on Wednesday evening (7 p.m.).
