Franklin men's cross country wasn't quite able to defend its team championship at the Hanover Invitational on Saturday morning, but junior William Hirsch retained his.

Hirsch crossed the finish line in 20:18.05 on the 6-kilometer course, better than 12 seconds ahead of the field. The Grizzly men placed third as a team with 77 points, trailing only Thomas More (45) and the host Panthers (55).

On the women's side, Franklin was fifth with 122 points; junior Fiona Sodrel was fifth on the individual leaderboard, covering the 5K course in 21:07.95.

Junior Zachary Schroeder also cracked the top 10 for the men, finishing eighth in a time of 21:05.96. Rounding out the scoring lineup were sophomore Espoir Emmanuel in 22nd, freshman Marcos Garcia in 29th and sophomore Austin Menefee in 32nd.

Freshmen Jaysa Crull (30th) and Maddy Hahn (35th) were next up for the Griz women, followed by senior Cailyn Baechle in 40th and sophomore Alex Mast in 46th.

The Griz harriers will be off the next two weekends before traveling south for the Louisville Cross Country Classic on Oct. 3.
