Baseball Caps Series Sweep at Berea

Franklin baseball needs wins down the stretch to secure its place in the HCAC tournament. On Sunday, the Grizzlies kept their recent roll going.

Picking it up midgame after a slow offensive start, the Griz earned a 10-5 victory at Berea to finish off a perfect weekend.

"It's always tough to go on the road and win," Grizzlies coach Lance Marshall said. "Proud of the guys for pulling together and getting the three-game sweep completed."

Neither team was able to get the bats going early, as Franklin starter Luke Harmon and the Mountaineers' Grabiel Martinez traded zeroes for the first three innings. It wasn't until Garrett DeHart scored on a fourth-inning error that either team was able to push a run across — but once the door opened for the Grizzlies, it swung open wide.

The visitors added on two runs in the fifth when Davis Wagner doubled to plate Ian Nuckles and came home himself on another Mountaineer miscue. Then, Franklin took control of the game with a five-run sixth. Nic Deering got the blitz going when he scored after an errant pickoff throw, and two more runs scored on a Dyllan Redmon double and a Wagner triple. DeHart scored Wagner with an RBI groundout, and Noah Loveall made it 8-0 when he doubled Zander Cobb home.

Berea finally broke up the shutout with three sixth-inning runs, but Franklin tacked on a pair in the top of the ninth with a Redmon RBI groundout and a run-scoring double by Ian Nuckles.

Harmon pitched eight innings for the win, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Deering, Wagner, Josh Girvan and Alex Billman each had two of the Grizzlies' 13 hits on the day.

Franklin plays a nonconference game at Wabash on Wednesday before finishing out the regular season with a three-game home series against Bluffton starting on Friday.
