Franklin softball went into Sunday batting above .400 as a team. The team's doubleheader against Olivet didn't do anything to change that.
The Grizzlies put up 12 runs in the first inning of the opener, setting the tone for 19-2 and 8-5 victories at Behrens Field.
"We kept the gas down, and we kept going all the way through," Griz coach Britt Harvey said.
Liv Staigl got Franklin (8-2) on the board first in game one with a two-run single, and
Kendall Lowry added a two-run double two batters later to make it 4-0. Then, with the bases loaded and only one out, No. 9 hitter
Jasmine Day ripped a three-run triple down the line in left field to bump the lead up to seven. Once the lineup turned over,
Kaylee Stewart doubled in a run and
Jaylee Fansler plated two with a base hit. Fansler eventually scored on an error and
Hadley Fuhrman came in on an RBI fielder's choice by
Ruth Kaiser.
RBI singles by Staigl and Fuhrman in the second inning made it 14-0 before Olivet got a run on the board. The Grizzlies then scored five more times in the bottom of the third.
Kristian Bond scored on an error and Fansler singled to drive in
Hannah Laughlin.
Abri Carey then doubled in a pair of runs and scored the 19th run on a Lowry two-bagger.
That was more than enough offense for
Kamzi Gross, who allowed just one hit while pitching the full five innings for the win.
The second game wasn't nearly as lopsided, but the Grizzlies still did enough to finish off the sweep.
"It's tough to do that to a team twice," Harvey said. "I've got a ton of respect for Olivet; they come back fighting every time they step on the field."
In game two, Kaiser got Franklin an early lead with a two-run triple in the first inning. After the Comets tied the game up at 2-2, the Grizzlies got one run in the third and two in the fourth to claim the lead for good.
Kali Laycock had an RBI double in the fifth and then scored on a
McKenna Lucas sacrifice fly; the final Griz run came on a
Jaclyn Diersing sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Rylan Young was the winning pitcher in the nightcap, allowing two earned runs and striking out five over six frames.
Harvey was able to get everyone in uniform Sunday onto the field, which not only got some young bench players game experience but also showcased how many bats the coach has at her disposal.
"It also shows the depth that we have in our dugout," Harvey said, "and I think it's super exciting to know what the future of the program looks like."
In the more immediate future, the Grizzlies return to action on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader against Kenyon at Earlham College.
